Medicare Part D continues its major improvements in 2026, building on the changes from 2025 to help lower out-of-pocket drug costs for beneficiaries. The $2,000 annual cap on what you pay for covered prescription drugs remains in place. Once you hit that amount, you won’t pay anything more for the rest of the year.
The 5 percent coinsurance that used to apply in the catastrophic phase remains eliminated, meaning no more added costs once you reach the $2,000 limit.
The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan, which launched in 2025, continues in 2026. This program allows you to spread your out-of-pocket prescription costs into manageable monthly payments throughout the year instead of paying large amounts at the pharmacy counter.
While the standard Part D deductible increases to $590 (from $545 in 2025), the out-of-pocket cap continues to protect beneficiaries from excessive drug costs. These updates maintain the focus on making drug coverage more affordable and predictable, especially for people taking high-cost medications.
